Diet and lifestyle have 'significant' impact on depression

Depression can be influenced by a number of factors and people should ensure that they take appropriate measures to get through this difficult time, according to the Depression Alliance.

In order to mark Depression Awareness Week, the chief executive of the Alliance explained that people suffering from depression and anxiety make up nearly a tenth (9.8 per cent) of the UK working population.

She added that being open with your employer, friends and family and taking good care of yourself are all key in terms of ensuring a quick and effective recovery.

Emer O'Neill, chief executive of Depression Alliance, said: "When people are depressed one of the key support mechanisms is to visit a GP. There are a whole range of other non-medical interventions that are absolutely key to getting people through this difficult time and also to maintain therapy.

"These are talking therapies, diet, exercise, lifestyle, making sure that people are connected in and have a good social support network with families or support groups."
